                        | 100 best English-language novels from 1923 till date – Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe |
                        | As a kid, I remember my mom forcing me to read that book. Though, I have to say that on starting to read the book, I fell in love with it myself. That book got me into reading novels as a kid especially when I was in secondary school. Been in a while since I read any, though. I am glad Papa Achebe's book (that's what I call him) made the list of 100. It's the only novel authored by a Nigerian (or an African as far as I know) on the list. That novel is a definite classic and I am glad even Time critics agree with that. The plot, the tragedy, the portrayal of the deep Ibo culture in a fiction, the dialogue, the candor, the passion of the protagonist which ultimately led to his demise, the chivalry, the colonialism of the country, Ikemefuna's death, etc, make it the best novel that has come out of Africa, not just Nigeria. And the title? Couldn't be better. NOW, THAT'S A CLASSIC! In fact, I am going to read that book again. And I can't wait to see the movie again when I finally make it to Naija some year. :)
Big ups to Naija's own, Chinua Achebe. You make me proud to be a Nigerian. EBUBEDIKE!!!! UMUOFIA KWENU!!! YAH! (Hope it's yah. : ))

I must also say that the list is definitely ok with me. It's very diverse. It includes books from a varied mix of authors – Salman Rushdie, Richard Wright, J.R.R. Tolkien (of course, Lord of the Rings), Zora Neale Hurston (Their Eyes Were Watching God – great book. read it for a college class. Hmmh. I wonder where my professor is now. Ms Yolanda was full of elegance and fiiiinnnneeee! Damn! I have to marry a woman like her! Oh sorry!) among others. Maybe Wole Soyinka could have made it. Just maybe. That would have been nice, but oh well, more than ever before (especially with all these bastard Nigerian fraudsters that mar our names) Papa Achebe has made me proud to be a Nigerian. UMUOFIA KWENU!!!

incredibly great book. would have like to see more diversity on that list though. seemed very "American". but then the Time magazine is.

obi tererente (just kidding. from Cadet in Nyja), true that. At least, the list had a couple of non-Americans and American minorities on the list. That was diverse to a minute extent, at least.

Things Fall Apart was definitely a classic... I swear I knew every line in in the movie including the songs and dances...My favorite sections were Parts 4 and 5, Ikemefuna's Murder and Akwaeke's Marriage ...don't get me started on that song

Things Fall Apart is a book that cannot be matched in Africa. The memory of the books is still fresh in my mind even though I read it about two decades ago. |
