3 main business units in IBM. Smart idea?
|
In the 4th quarter of 2005, IBM earned $3.19 billion, or $1.99 per share, on revenue of $24.4 billion, beating analysts estimate. This was without the adjustment of $267 million as a result of the company's decision to freeze its pension plans in 2008, a measure that has caused a lot of grumblings and possibly outcries in the future.
The worrisome part to me about the earnings was that the services revenue in the priod was $12 billion, down 5% from a year earlier. IBM in recent years decided to focus on systems, software and services, selling all its other business units - personal computing division being the latest. The problem with this new model is that over 50% of its revenue is from the services unit. This has made the company the #1 computer services company in the world, but what happens if services revenue declines? The company has a problem!
The realignment of its focus in few businesses was and is a smart idea in a way, but at the same time having 1 out of your 3 main business units producing over 50% of your revenue raises a lot of questions. If I was an investor in the company, I would be quite worried. But maybe I wouldn't. It's IBM, they've weathered innumerable storms in almost a century and that's why I have a great admiration for the behemoth.
However, I hope the company finds a way to create a revenue balance among its business units.
