First Female African President - I hope George Weah will let peace reign!
|
The elections in Liberia on November 8th was definitely an outstanding achievement for a country that has been in war as far back as God knows when. I remember watching the video of how Samuel Doe - the notorious dictator whose autocratic rule ignited the war - was killed slowly one body part at a time by the now-exiled Charles Taylor. Since then that country has been in turmoil for the most part. However, recently they were able to conduct an election which international observers unanimously described as free and fair. But guess what as usual for African elections, one of the 2 main candidates - George Opon Weah, whom I remember in his good old days of being a soccer star especially in Chelsea, has decided not to accept the election results. The elections results so far indicate that Harvard-trained economist Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, 67, has won 59.6 percent of the vote.
George Weah and his party have cried foul, saying the election had some rigging and they are demanding a recount. I don't know the details, but this sounds really familiar especially after hearing some Liberians being interviewed on the streets of Monrovia about the whole issue on NPR. It remined me of the M.K.O Abiola and Tofa elections in Nigeria in 1993 and many other African elections. Regardless of the validity of the fraud charges, I just really pray and hope that George Weah and his party will let the courts and electorate prevail, accept the results, have a discourse with Ellen. I really hope these guys will truly be great leader to the youths that love him so much and take the country further on its journey towards greatness, rather than lead the country to war which will not be a new occurence in Africa. This tends to happen often in African elections. The loser gets furious and starts a war. I hope George Weah in all his decency won't let this happen in Lineria.
To be frank, I think it will be extremely great for peace and the progress of the country if Ellen makes him the Vice President. That will be superb for the country's peace.
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, please take the country forward and let George Weah play a major role in the Liberian government. GEORGE WEAH, PLEASE STOP LISTENING TO THOSE WARLORD FRIENDS OF YOURS AND MOVE THE COUNTRY FORWARD BY LETTING ORDER PREVAIL. LIBERIA DOES NOT NEED ANOTHER WAR! You have a great chance of winning the next election, like one of the youths said on NPR. Let Africa and the world welcome the FIRST FEMALE AFRICAN PRESIDENT to her post.
