Everybody wants to be like iTunes!
Hollywood movie studios are finally getting with the program. After all these years, they are finally accepting the fact that the internet is that media resource that is not going anywhere and every market has to join in on... They have always feared redirecting consumers' to new movie media outlets for the fear of losing their #1 money-making venture - DVD sales. But now, they seem to have gotten the fact that they have no choice but to take a deep and possibly risky plunge into other ways of selling their movies.

Starting today, you will be able to download blockbuster movies from the internet and watch the movie on your computer for the lifetime of the computer. More than 200 movie titles will go on sale through movielink, a site set up by 5 of 6 major studios - Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, Universal, MGM and Paramount. 20th Century Fox movies will be downloadable too. They will be sold for btw $30 for new releases and $10 for older titles.

I'm sure you are excited to hear that. But guess what? Movielink will allow you to copy the movie onto a DVD, from which the movie can be downloaded to 2 other computers, but it cannot be played on a conventional DVD player due to security encoding. On CinemaNow (another outlet), you can't even transfer the movie to another computer; you can only watch it on one computer. Hmm.....interesting...judging from the ridiculous prices they are offering them for, i know workarounds will show up soon for sure.

Why would I pay all that money for a movie that I am restricted to viewing with very few devices? I really don't know. Especially when I can buy about 5 of those movies for $25 at Walmart and watch them on any device. I really wonder how quickly people will adopt this. It seems risky for the studios but to me, as time goes on and high speed internet and complete home digital systems become more popular (thanks to Intel's entertainment-based chips among other innovations), it will catch on with most consumers and then fetch the studios some good profits.

This development, I think is all due to Job's Apple anywayz. Everybody just wants to be like iTunes!
