The striped shoes are about to take over...
|
Adidas signed an 11-yr deal with NBA and WNBA on Tuesday, making the German company the official uniform and apparel provider of the league. This is mainly due to Adidas' acquisition of Reebok (a deal that I thought was an excellent way for 2 companies, one dominating and the other, fighting for domination in 2 different markets to, each, stretch its global reach), the incumbent official uniform and apparel provider of the league. I don't know how Nike allowed that to happen. Reebok, back then, must have given NBA an offer they couldn't refuse!
I believe this could hurt the bottomline of Nike in many ways. The constant sight of Adidas and Reebok by the NBA audience could end up making the market impact Adidas and Reebok were hoping for when they decided to come together and confront Nike the Giant. They might actually end up beating the Giant. It will be a tough call but I believe with a couple of more such potentially consumer-influencing deals (the upcoming World Cup in Germany being another one), they will give Nike a run for its money for sure. That's why I love capitalism! Especially when it is slightly regulated to curtail monopoly. I believe Nike executives are having some sleepless nights cos the striped shoes are about to be er'where.
