Should referee's decision be final?
I was listening to NPR today and I heard about a German soccer referree that was jailed for fixing games. He was involved in fixing almost 23 games in collaboration with some addicted Croatian gambler.
This incident comes at a time when Germany is about to host the World cup - 2006. It doesn't look good on them at all. I can imagine that every football fan will be quite wary of a German referee from now on; actually maybe referees in general.

The whole incident brings to light the question of technology in football (soccer) games. In American football, teams have a limited number of challenges that allows them to question a referee's decision and have the play re-examined. Here is a summary:

"In the NFL, a team's coach may "challenge" a play if he thinks an official's ruling is incorrect. He does so by tossing a red flag (like the yellow flags used by officials to denote penalties) onto the field. The referee then has 90 seconds to review multiple videotaped angles of the play, and then he either overturns or upholds the ruling. If the ruling is upheld, the team that challenged the play is charged with a time out. A team is given only two challenges per game. However, in the 2004 season the rules were changed so a team would be granted a third challenge if the first two were successful. A play can only be challenged before the next one has started."

Many have proposed that this should be introduced to the game of football (or soccer as some people know it. pls!!). Personally, I think this will Americanize soccer and take away from what soccer has been for centuries. The referee's descision should be final. That's why there are 3 referees, like the FIFA official that I heard said. Though I must also acknowledge the fact that if a referee's decision affects a team, that I am passionate about, negatively, I would react otherwise. Actually, hmmh... maybe there could be a compromise? Maybe, challenges can be done when the decision could have a tremendous effect on who wins the game. I don't know...but I would rather have soccer rules the way it is and not the introduction of timeouts, challenges and all that crap. Soccer is for the strong and not just the strong, the strong that have the endurance to play for 45 minutes non-stop!!!
