Thanksgiving Day - My Reasons to Give Thanks!
|
It was thanksgiving last week Thursday here in the United States - a day that should be called reunion day, from what I have observed since I've been here in the US. It's the only time when many family members see themselves throughout the year. However, personally, based on how I spend the day every year since I have been here, I call it STOPOVER DAY. Since, I do not have blood relatives here in the country, I usually spend Thanksgiving Day stopping over at all the dinners and lunches I am invited to by people (coworkers and friends).
This year, I stopped over at 4 different places (few compared to some of my past stopover days), the last one being my most familiar stop which was mad fun. All in all, it was a great thanksgiving day for me. Lots of fun. But I did not do something I normally do every year. I did not wake up to say a prayer of thanks to God - an indication of how far I have moved to the left. :) However, on hearing the sermon in church on Sunday, I have to say that I felt contrite, and took some time off later to think of very simple reasons for me to give thanks. Innumerable In spite of my being a bad son, I have uncountable (haven't used that word since I was a kid :) ) reasons to give thanks. Just to mention a few:
1) I am alive, hale and hearty. 2) My family members and all my friends are alive, hale and hearty and doing well also. 3) I have a good job that I got by great favor. 4) Everywhere that I have been to all my life, I have ALWAYS found favor in the sight of everyone I met. EVERYWHERE! 5) All my life, God has always endowed me with great intelligence, though, I must say that I haven't cultivated or developed it in recent years - been very lazy. 6) Since I have been here in this country, all by myself. I have always found good jobs when I searched for them. My sophomore year in college, I had 6 great job offers (Goldman Sachs, United States National Lab in New Mexico, Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen & Hamilton, SAIC among others). EMI KEKERE YI NA! I was so confused on which one to choose, that I had to seek for advice. I mean, that was just outstanding favor from God. Thanks be to God. 7) I have always heard good news from my family since I left them 8 yrs ago. 8) Recently, without even asking, my manager approached me to tell me that he was going to work on increasing my salary. He felt I deserved more. In the long run, it didn't happen due to whatever reasons, but thank God, they gave me a bonus. (I pray that next year, they adjust my pay and pay me at least what my cohorts are getting paid, which is only fair. I will leave that for another day). 9) I have been presented with great opportunities (many of which I have misused) that I know many of my cohorts have not had. 10) God has always provided for me in spite of my being a spendthrift (I have learnt the hard way to be otherwise now. still got a whole lot of work though) 11) I have been blessed with so many great friends that have been there for me through thick and thin. That reminds me, I WANT TO USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO THANK ALL MY FRIENDS THAT HAVE BEEN THERE FOR ME AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF MY LIFE AND FOR THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN THERE FOR ME AT ALL TIMES. THANK YOU AND THANK GOD FOR Y'ALL! 12) For mercies and grace. ETC, ETC, ETC, ETC....
All in all, I have too many reasons to thank God. I have made innumerable expensive mistakes and have learnt a whole lot in the past few years of my life. I hope I live many more years to rectify these mistakes and become the great person that I know I am destined to be. THANKS BE TO GOD FOR ALL THINGS!!!! Humph! That was refreshing! :)
