Yoruba terms by an igbo female.
A friend of mine (Igbo person) jokingly wanted to prove to me that she could speak Yoruba cos I told her she couldn't. Here is the proof. I thought it was dead funny! Some of the translations are just too funny to me. I had to burst into laughter reading them. Thank God my office mate was not around. LMAO!
I know my yoruba very well and I can prove it. Let me give you some examples.
Eh kpata wofun-Clap your hand
Abi onshere ni?-is something wrong with your head?
Kpele-Sorry
Ma shekpe fuen-I will slap you
Ki loshe omodeyi-What is wrong with this child?
Ema gbami-Don't kill me
Otito-finish
Aladurah- (I don't know what this means) For real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ashewo- Free woman-( I think all nigerians and all the igbos know what this means. The igbos react violently when you call them this)..
A song (I know you know this. Ose o jesu Bla bla bla bla bla Ose o jesu Olorun wa yowa Ose o jesu Bamu wa mi yor Baba ope tamu wa fu yun. La la la.
HOW DID I DO?
Hmmm...let's seee...how did she do? Only someone who understands Yoruba can say how she did. For me...let's see...what can i say in Igbo? Hmmm...only one statement apart from the greetings...o tun nnegi! Most Igbos get mad at me when I say that, but hey...that's what I was thought in high school by my Igbo friends!
WTF? This is some crazy mom, I got to tell you. I read that the "puncher" is a mom and the "punchee" is a teacher. If that's true, that child better leave that school cos I will get mine back if I was the teacher.
Crazy shit, for real! The shock on the punchee's face is definitely a classic. Was that for real? I would be shocked too myself. WHAT!
I read an article, Fired For Surfing, about this guy who was fired for surfing the net at work and a NY judge ruled that he couldn't be fired. In a way, the article reminded me of myself. If you are looking for the most paranoid person at work, I am the one! Everytime I am at work, I am very careful about how much I surf the net or chat on instant messenger. I am careful about what sites I go to, how long I surf the net, what I say on IM, etc. Many times, when I am chatting with friends while I am at work, I always have to caution them about what to say or to code what they say. I speak more Yoruba than anyone else that I know on IM especially when I am at work. I even have American friends who I have taught some words in Yoruba in order to use those words to code what we talk about when we are talking online. I am cos I know how easy it is to be tracked at work. I just think if you are going to be fired, it shouldn't be for something that you could have easily avoided. It doesn't cost that much at all to buy tracking softwares. They cost as little as $99 per license in some cases. I guess my paranoia might also be due to the fact that I have friends who have been warned at work to surf the net less and I also have friends in some companies who watch their employees' monitors on their own screens while the employees are working, a very common trend in the telemarketing world. The policies vary with different companies. There are comapnies where one has to be more careful than the others, so it really depends.
I have to say that I love the judge's ruling. As long as surfing the net does not in any way hinder the progress of your work, you should never be questioned (though I got to say that that could have exceptions). He said that the same standard should be applied to personal Internet use as is applied to other personal activities. If you are allowed to take personal calls at work, you should be able to do some personal internet browsing too. This makes perfect sense. However, I also have to acknowledge that internet use could be very distracting in a very good number of cases. There are days that internet browsing kills my time and there are days that I have too much work to surf the net. I think each person just has to learn to be responsible about the use of the net at work. Make sure it does not affect your job productivity in any way cos that's what pays the check. I also think one has to be careful cos if they are trying to get rid of you, they can always use that as excuse, though cases like the aforementioned might help to curb that, depending on the state or country you are in.
Maybe this ruling will give me more laxity to surf the net as I like. Yeah right!
Got to say, though! Those women that accepted his service got issues to me. Why would you let some random guy from nowhere examine your breasts. WTF? For real mehn, that definitely defines lewd and lascivious conduct! Straight up!
This is why you can never me catch me sleeping naked. Hmmm....actually...ok...maybe you can...on a night of a REEEEAAALLY good one! ;) But better to go to bed with something on, anywayz...
This article applied to me more than anyone else I know of. My sudden application of brakes, pressing all the way down on the accelerator, not servicing my car as scheduled among other gas-guzzling driving habits. Check the article out. Might save you a $1 or $2 with the current preposterously high gas prices.
I guess these people have become addicted to Africa or something. They have announced that they plan to have their baby in the Erongo region of Namibia and could poossibly give their child a Namibian name. Hmmm....interesting! The funny thing about their stay in Namibia to me is that their place of abode is a luxurious resort, which they have completely rented for their stay (A 14-room or so resort). How about they get a place that is not that isolated and have a more intimate taste of the plight of the Namibian masses... I guess they can't. Just wondering...
Wow. I can't believe it! First of all, it was Chrisland Primary (Elementary) at Opebi which I don't have much memory of. After that, it was Sunnyfield Primary School where mom would drop us on her way to work everyday. He was the rough kid and I was the mild and quiet one who he still somehow listened to. At least till his teenage years. He was always looking all roughened up by the time school was over and I still always had my shirt tucked in. After school, we always had to wait for hours for mom to pick us up, so while we waited we would go to the back of the school to play soccer (regardless of the fact that mom told us not to do so) and after a while, I would leave and try to get him out of the field. It took a while sometimes to get him out of the field but I usually did from the tiny memories I still have from then. We would then go to the gate to wait for mom with our sister in order to avoid being caught by mom playing soccer. Actually, come to think of it, other kids usually got picked up one at a time till we were the last ones left. And the 3 of us always ended up by the maa'llam (security guard) by the school gate still playing while we waited. He always did more of the interaction with the maa'llam. I could go on and on, but...
Oh, yes! I remember us sneaking out to go play soccer together when mom was not home and we would clean up before she came back. All the late nights talk about girls while I was on the top bed and he was below and I would sometimes wet the bed (bedwetting, we called it) and he would of course know...duuuhh...he was below and not say jack to mom or anyone. He knew I wanted the top bed and still didn't complain about it to mom regardless of the fact that I "rained" on him periodically (that's gross, I know, but hey..it's the truth). We were right hand men! I remember him getting mad at my mom for having to wear some of the things I had worn (pass-me-down) or having to wear the same native attire with me for Easter and Christmas to go see my late grandfather (RIP, Baba!). I remember him getting accepted by Federal Government College, Ikot-Ekpenne (high school), hundreds of miles from home and mom said no but he insisted that that was where he wanted to go to. Mom and Dad ended up allowing him and he loved it! I remember us escorting him to board the luxurious bus (Ekenne DiliChukwu buses et al) to embark on the over 12 hrs or so drive, if I remember. Once we got to the station then, he always just put his things in the bus and said bye immediately without even looking back like I did when I got to my own 2-hr drive high school the next day. He would just say, you guys can go. I will be fine. He came home with stories of conquest and adventure. Talking about how the Ikot Ekpenne chicks were dead gorgeous (which I agreed with cos those Calabar -like we termed everyone from Cross Rivers and Akwa Ibom state- girls, were too fiiiiineeee) and how they "scaled" fence to go to town and have fun. He had all kinds of stories. His second year, he was transferred back to my high school and he hated that. He wanted the hard life in Ikot Ekpenne. He was always the rough and more adventurous one and he still is. ok...the memories go on and on.
Oh...yes! I remember how we hung out during the holidays and he ended up becoming a friend of all my friends. We would go play soccer, play "tennis" with marks we made ourselves on the floor (L, LA, LAG, LAGO, LAGOS and many more), eat pepper soup at Mommy Bendel's place (like we called her), create complete torchlights with home-made materials, bring apart our boom box and tv and put them back together, create home-made antennas with different tools in order to tap into neighbors' cables in order to see BOP tv (hope i got that right), MTV, Sky Channel, etc, cos there was no way mom was going to spend her money on that. We were right hand men! The memories go on and on.
Since I came here to US, I haven't been the best of a brother to him, but in recent years, I have been much much better. He has made a name for himself doing great as an accountant with ICAN (more like CPA here in US) in Nigeria and working on building his own house among many other projects and I am dead proud of him. My younger brother is getting married. This weekend is his introduction (a Nigerian tradition in which the bride and groom's families are officially introduced to one another) and I can't overemphasize how I am so proud of him. I thank God for this day and many more to come in his life. I can't believe it. That's my dawg. Congratulations, lil' brother!!!! Sorry I can't be there this weekend but I will rather be dead than miss your wedding in January. God keep us all till then and decades of years more after that. I am really excited about this and really can't wait! May God bless him and his lovely wife-to-be and make their marriage an epitome of a great, happy and godly marriage!
Adidas signed an 11-yr deal with NBA and WNBA on Tuesday, making the German company the official uniform and apparel provider of the league. This is mainly due to Adidas' acquisition of Reebok (a deal that I thought was an excellent way for 2 companies, one dominating and the other, fighting for domination in 2 different markets to, each, stretch its global reach), the incumbent official uniform and apparel provider of the league. I don't know how Nike allowed that to happen. Reebok, back then, must have given NBA an offer they couldn't refuse!
I believe this could hurt the bottomline of Nike in many ways. The constant sight of Adidas and Reebok by the NBA audience could end up making the market impact Adidas and Reebok were hoping for when they decided to come together and confront Nike the Giant. They might actually end up beating the Giant. It will be a tough call but I believe with a couple of more such potentially consumer-influencing deals (the upcoming World Cup in Germany being another one), they will give Nike a run for its money for sure. That's why I love capitalism! Especially when it is slightly regulated to curtail monopoly. I believe Nike executives are having some sleepless nights cos the striped shoes are about to be er'where.
Apple store has some nice deals for their ubiquitous iPods starting from $49. They have a good number of refurbished iPods on their site for great prices. I normally don't like the refurbished idea but i do it when it is done by the original makers and I am getting it from the original makers themselves.
This is quite an invention to me - a portable washing machine. The Astone Mobile Washer is an inflatable washer that holds about 6.5 liters of water and it is just about 4.5lbs. That's some neat intention for sure. Like the article says, it is useful for camping et al. Very neat invention I have to say, though its widespread adoption might take years to witness. Love it, regardless!
Spirit airline is offering $9 to Cancun, Kingston, Montgeo Bay among others from Fort Lauderdale. Most likely, by the time anyone sees this, they might have ran out and I can imagine there is a catch on the junk fees added, but there is no loss in trying. Here is the link with a little bit of more informtion:
Apple just released Boot Camp, a software that allows you to install Windows on their new Intel-based Macs. It will allow the user to choose which OS to boot on booting the system - Windows XP or Mac OS X Tiger (or Leopard in the future). This is definitely a major catch for me cos I have always thought of getting a Mac but just always brushed it aside cos I knew it would restrict me from doing most of my development work which are, for the most part, done on a Windows-based system. With the advent of this new software, it will make it possible for one to have 2 rival OSes on the same system, both with its own advantage. Apple's OS X (one of the best OSes out there right now) will be my personal fun-based aesthetically inclined, yet undeniably powerful OS while Microsoft Windows XP will be my development OS, a feat that would have required 2 different machines before now. This is best of both worlds to me, really. Initially, I didn't like the adoption of Intel-based chips by Apple but now, I am cool with it. I look forward to this...
Katie Couric, on her 15th anniversary with NBC's Today's Show, announced her much speculated move from NBC to CBS today once her contract ends in September if i'm right. I wonder what that show will be like without her cos really, there is no Today's show without that woman. If I think of that show, I think of her and Matt Lauer or whatever his name is (and I guess Al Roker too). And her rise to stardom? Very motivating! I just can't imagine that show without her. I have no idea how NBC will find a replacement for her without losing their rating as #1 morning show for the past 10 yrs pretty much non-stop. Outstanding record!!!
I watch the show every now and then but I know I will miss her myself. There is this serene aroma she carries around her that keeps me watching everytime I tune in in the mornings. I love that woman! Very calm, serene, elegant, motherly and inexplicable youthful, mystically passionate and unbecoming down-to-earth persona that she exudes when I watch her, though I have heard she is quite temperamental. Pls! People will always make up shit! She just looks like a celebrity that you can relate with somehow. She looks human unlike a lot fo TV faces that just look outlandish to me. :)
I know she is moving on to greater things though just a meager $2 million increase from her $13 million/5 years that she currently has with NBC according to annonymous sources. However, I think it's worth it. She will become the first woman to anchor a network evening show replacing the famous (or "climatically infamous" due to issues) Dan Rather who has been filled on for by Bob Schieffer so far. I am definitely excited for her and look forward to seeing her first appearance in September. Meanwhile, without her, to me, there is no Today's Show. I'm sorry...
The Federal Reserve Bank gave Citigroup the go-ahead for acquisitions after a year-long no-no imposed on them after a string of scandals. They can now go on to what they do best - growth-by-acquisitions. They are great at acquiring other companies, though knowing when to sell some at the same time. That company is just huge! It's a behemoth of a company with as much as 8 million client accounts and assets above $1 trillion. And it has no plans to stop growing! It's unbelievable to me. It's a company that the day-to-day management leaves me perplexed everytime I think of how it is managed. As big as they are, the are no free to continue their shopping spree. I wonder which companies they will be acquiring next especially since the great Wall Street negotiator and legend, Sandy Weil, is stepping down and one of my most-admired business minds - Margie Magner - is gone.
Until you're able to conquer the fear of "catching the blame," you probably will not have enough courage to become the entrepreneurial person you ought to be. ~ Robert Schuller
Hollywood movie studios are finally getting with the program. After all these years, they are finally accepting the fact that the internet is that media resource that is not going anywhere and every market has to join in on... They have always feared redirecting consumers' to new movie media outlets for the fear of losing their #1 money-making venture - DVD sales. But now, they seem to have gotten the fact that they have no choice but to take a deep and possibly risky plunge into other ways of selling their movies.
Starting today, you will be able to download blockbuster movies from the internet and watch the movie on your computer for the lifetime of the computer. More than 200 movie titles will go on sale through movielink, a site set up by 5 of 6 major studios - Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, Universal, MGM and Paramount. 20th Century Fox movies will be downloadable too. They will be sold for btw $30 for new releases and $10 for older titles.
I'm sure you are excited to hear that. But guess what? Movielink will allow you to copy the movie onto a DVD, from which the movie can be downloaded to 2 other computers, but it cannot be played on a conventional DVD player due to security encoding. On CinemaNow (another outlet), you can't even transfer the movie to another computer; you can only watch it on one computer. Hmm.....interesting...judging from the ridiculous prices they are offering them for, i know workarounds will show up soon for sure.
Why would I pay all that money for a movie that I am restricted to viewing with very few devices? I really don't know. Especially when I can buy about 5 of those movies for $25 at Walmart and watch them on any device. I really wonder how quickly people will adopt this. It seems risky for the studios but to me, as time goes on and high speed internet and complete home digital systems become more popular (thanks to Intel's entertainment-based chips among other innovations), it will catch on with most consumers and then fetch the studios some good profits.
This development, I think is all due to Job's Apple anywayz. Everybody just wants to be like iTunes!
