Direct Access to Humans at various Customer Service Desks.
Many times when I call a customer service line, I am welcomed by some automated system. This, I know pisses me off just like many other people, I know. I always press 0 immediately hoping to talk to a human being rather than the automated service. However, this does not always work. I found the website of some guy (Paul English) that has been able to discover ways to bypass the automated service to talk to a real customer service agent. He has a web page where he lists various companies' customer service numbers and the steps needed to reach a human rather than the automated voice. This i know has been of use for me since I found out. Here is the cheat sheet:

Thanksgiving Day - My Reasons to Give Thanks!
It was thanksgiving last week Thursday here in the United States - a day that should be called reunion day, from what I have observed since I've been here in the US. It's the only time when many family members see themselves throughout the year. However, personally, based on how I spend the day every year since I have been here, I call it STOPOVER DAY. Since, I do not have blood relatives here in the country, I usually spend Thanksgiving Day stopping over at all the dinners and lunches I am invited to by people (coworkers and friends).

This year, I stopped over at 4 different places (few compared to some of my past stopover days), the last one being my most familiar stop which was mad fun. All in all, it was a great thanksgiving day for me. Lots of fun. But I did not do something I normally do every year. I did not wake up to say a prayer of thanks to God - an indication of how far I have moved to the left. :) However, on hearing the sermon in church on Sunday, I have to say that I felt contrite, and took some time off later to think of very simple reasons for me to give thanks. Innumerable In spite of my being a bad son, I have uncountable (haven't used that word since I was a kid :) ) reasons to give thanks. Just to mention a few:

1) I am alive, hale and hearty.
2) My family members and all my friends are alive, hale and hearty and doing well also.
3) I have a good job that I got by great favor.
4) Everywhere that I have been to all my life, I have ALWAYS found favor in the sight of everyone I met. EVERYWHERE!
5) All my life, God has always endowed me with great intelligence, though, I must say that I haven't cultivated or developed it in recent years - been very lazy.
6) Since I have been here in this country, all by myself. I have always found good jobs when I searched for them. My sophomore year in college, I had 6 great job offers (Goldman Sachs, United States National Lab in New Mexico, Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen & Hamilton, SAIC among others). EMI KEKERE YI NA! I was so confused on which one to choose, that I had to seek for advice. I mean, that was just outstanding favor from God. Thanks be to God.
7) I have always heard good news from my family since I left them 8 yrs ago.
8) Recently, without even asking, my manager approached me to tell me that he was going to work on increasing my salary. He felt I deserved more. In the long run, it didn't happen due to whatever reasons, but thank God, they gave me a bonus. (I pray that next year, they adjust my pay and pay me at least what my cohorts are getting paid, which is only fair. I will leave that for another day).
9) I have been presented with great opportunities (many of which I have misused) that I know many of my cohorts have not had.
10) God has always provided for me in spite of my being a spendthrift (I have learnt the hard way to be otherwise now. still got a whole lot of work though)
11) I have been blessed with so many great friends that have been there for me through thick and thin. That reminds me, I WANT TO USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO THANK ALL MY FRIENDS THAT HAVE BEEN THERE FOR ME AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF MY LIFE AND FOR THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN THERE FOR ME AT ALL TIMES. THANK YOU AND THANK GOD FOR Y'ALL!
12) For mercies and grace. ETC, ETC, ETC, ETC....

All in all, I have too many reasons to thank God. I have made innumerable expensive mistakes and have learnt a whole lot in the past few years of my life. I hope I live many more years to rectify these mistakes and become the great person that I know I am destined to be. THANKS BE TO GOD FOR ALL THINGS!!!! Humph! That was refreshing! :)

Granny's advice for girl on a date gone sour! lol
Read this joke and I was rolling:

A young girl was going on a date. Her grandmother said, "Sit here and let me tell you about those young boys." "He is going to try and kiss you, you are going to like that, but don't let him do that. He is going to try and feel your breast, you are going to like that but don't let him do that. But most important, he is going to try and get on top of you to have his way with you. You are going to like that, but don't let him do that. It will disgrace the family." With that bit of advice, the granddaughter went on her date. The next day she told grandma that her date went just like she had predicted, "Grandma, I didn't let him disgrace the family. When he tried, I just turned over, got on top of him, and disgraced HIS family..." Granny fainted!

Cleaning your canned drinks before drinking!!!
I read one of those chain emails today about how you could get infected with some crazy-named disease if you drink from soda et al. It's an email that I read sometime ago and got me to start a new habit. Here is the email:

This incident happened recently in North Texas. A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on Wednesday. The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of coke she drank from, not using a glass.
Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis. Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.
A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e). full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

I know it sounds like one of those useless emails that we all delete, but hold on... I decided to google that disease just to confirm or dispel my fears and the reason for my habit. Guess what! I found out that the story could possibly be true. I don't like spreading unnecessary paranoia but it doesn't hurt in any way to clean the top of canned sodas that you did not open the box. This applies especially to canned sodas from vending machines. You don't know the history of those, but at least, you can vouch for the ones that you bought from grocery stores yourself in boxes and opened them up.
Anyway, it doesn't hurt to clean the top of your can sodas before drinking them. Like my principal in school (I love that man, Adefolaju, most inspiring principal of all time) used to say, "To be fore-warned, is to be fore-armed." I clean the top of my canned drinks almost all the time - not all. :) It doesnt' hurt me in any way. ;)

Why Guys should or should not wear boxers?
Boxers or briefs? Hmmph! Let's see… It's amazing to see how things have changed over years. I didn't grow up with my dad but I was around him quite a bit and I don't remember seeing a pair of boxers in his closet. However, these days it's a no-no for a guy to wear briefs. I was having this conversation with a couple of friends recently and all the ladies were with one voice - they don't like briefs on guys; they think it's not sexy.
Thinking about the whole thing just made me remember something my mom said when I was in secondary school (high school). Back then in high school, there was a period when sailing was a fad. SAILING is when a guy goes on without wearing boxers or briefs; he just lets the gbola hang. lol. My brother and I got into the fad too. We would just let the "John Thomas" hang. Somehow, my mom found out and would beg us to specifically wear briefs or else our JTs would grow too big and women would be running from us because it will too big (she definitely was from a different generation cos ladies these days love it big like that, so I don't know what she was talking about). We didn't listen cos I know I was like hell yeah, I didn't know it had that effect but now that I know mom, I'm just going to keep on sailing. She went as far as telling our friends to convince us to stop sailing and wear some briefs (Pls, they were doing the same thing). I don't know if it worked though, I will leave that to the so-called ladies she talked about to decide. lol. I wish!

The boxers idea sounds more like it to me. It gives the penis more air and possibly room to grow. lol. But the choice is left to the individual that either wears what he wants to wear OR wears what the ladies love. Everyone has his/her own proclivity, but I think that reason could be a motivation for some guys that are still lagging behind in the world of briefs. lol. pls! Hey, just thinking out loud!

Should referee's decision be final?
I was listening to NPR today and I heard about a German soccer referree that was jailed for fixing games. He was involved in fixing almost 23 games in collaboration with some addicted Croatian gambler.
This incident comes at a time when Germany is about to host the World cup - 2006. It doesn't look good on them at all. I can imagine that every football fan will be quite wary of a German referee from now on; actually maybe referees in general.

The whole incident brings to light the question of technology in football (soccer) games. In American football, teams have a limited number of challenges that allows them to question a referee's decision and have the play re-examined. Here is a summary:

"In the NFL, a team's coach may "challenge" a play if he thinks an official's ruling is incorrect. He does so by tossing a red flag (like the yellow flags used by officials to denote penalties) onto the field. The referee then has 90 seconds to review multiple videotaped angles of the play, and then he either overturns or upholds the ruling. If the ruling is upheld, the team that challenged the play is charged with a time out. A team is given only two challenges per game. However, in the 2004 season the rules were changed so a team would be granted a third challenge if the first two were successful. A play can only be challenged before the next one has started."

Many have proposed that this should be introduced to the game of football (or soccer as some people know it. pls!!). Personally, I think this will Americanize soccer and take away from what soccer has been for centuries. The referee's descision should be final. That's why there are 3 referees, like the FIFA official that I heard said. Though I must also acknowledge the fact that if a referee's decision affects a team, that I am passionate about, negatively, I would react otherwise. Actually, hmmh... maybe there could be a compromise? Maybe, challenges can be done when the decision could have a tremendous effect on who wins the game. I don't know...but I would rather have soccer rules the way it is and not the introduction of timeouts, challenges and all that crap. Soccer is for the strong and not just the strong, the strong that have the endurance to play for 45 minutes non-stop!!!

First Female African President - I hope George Weah will let peace reign!
The elections in Liberia on November 8th was definitely an outstanding achievement for a country that has been in war as far back as God knows when. I remember watching the video of how Samuel Doe - the notorious dictator whose autocratic rule ignited the war - was killed slowly one body part at a time by the now-exiled Charles Taylor. Since then that country has been in turmoil for the most part. However, recently they were able to conduct an election which international observers unanimously described as free and fair. But guess what as usual for African elections, one of the 2 main candidates - George Opon Weah, whom I remember in his good old days of being a soccer star especially in Chelsea, has decided not to accept the election results. The elections results so far indicate that Harvard-trained economist Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, 67, has won 59.6 percent of the vote.

George Weah and his party have cried foul, saying the election had some rigging and they are demanding a recount. I don't know the details, but this sounds really familiar especially after hearing some Liberians being interviewed on the streets of Monrovia about the whole issue on NPR. It remined me of the M.K.O Abiola and Tofa elections in Nigeria in 1993 and many other African elections. Regardless of the validity of the fraud charges, I just really pray and hope that George Weah and his party will let the courts and electorate prevail, accept the results, have a discourse with Ellen. I really hope these guys will truly be great leader to the youths that love him so much and take the country further on its journey towards greatness, rather than lead the country to war which will not be a new occurence in Africa. This tends to happen often in African elections. The loser gets furious and starts a war. I hope George Weah in all his decency won't let this happen in Lineria.

To be frank, I think it will be extremely great for peace and the progress of the country if Ellen makes him the Vice President. That will be superb for the country's peace.

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, please take the country forward and let George Weah play a major role in the Liberian government. GEORGE WEAH, PLEASE STOP LISTENING TO THOSE WARLORD FRIENDS OF YOURS AND MOVE THE COUNTRY FORWARD BY LETTING ORDER PREVAIL. LIBERIA DOES NOT NEED ANOTHER WAR! You have a great chance of winning the next election, like one of the youths said on NPR. Let Africa and the world welcome the FIRST FEMALE AFRICAN PRESIDENT to her post.

Godiva orgasm???
I learnt something quite interesting today. It better not be true. I've always "heard" :) about people having orgasm in different ways - usually through methods that involve physical contact. However, I didn't know that eating chocolate, Godiva among others, could actually give you orgasm (not just orgasm, orgasms in a continuum or in other words multiple orgasms). On hearing about this, I had to google that crap (idle me, I know) and I came across this article:

http://www.cleansheets.com/articles/howto_01.17.01.shtml

Now, that's quite a descriptive article. It gives a mildly erotic description of the usefulness of chocolate in helping my dear lady to reach that climax. Laughter, Chocolate, Orgasm - inexplicable combo - brought about by the power of chocolate. I know ladies love chocolate and all but chocolate giving orgasm? Men, that just sounds impossible to me. Could this really be true OR those that believe this just have an illusive orgasm which they claim is multiple orgasm? I guess only ladies know for sure cos I am dead sure no Godiva will give any guy orgasm. HELL NO!!! Actually, like I have heard people say, maybe it's really all in the mind!

Hmmph! Anywayz, now, I know how I can make sure my girlfriend or wife doesn't mess around while I am away. Buy her boxes of Godiva chocolate. Hell yeah!

Those oil executives (more like robbers) deserve to be grilled and even more!!!
In the 3rd quarter of this year, oil companies made record profits. Profits like never seen before for a single quarter. Exxon alone made as much as in $9.92 billion profits; IN PROFITS, NOT IN REVENUES!!! HOW THE F^%^!!!

Is that a surprise? I don't think so. I used to fill my tank with about $36 gas before the whole Katrina/Hurricane sagas, but AFTER THAT, I have filled my tank for $52. Why won't they make so much profits. BASTARDS!!!

5 of the oil companies' executives (Exxon Mobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch Shell and BP) appeared before the Senate yesterday and as expected they defended their profits. They claimed there was no price gouging and that the price of energy today was being driven by larger forces out of their control. Ni*^&^, pls! Actually, can't say that cos they are white. :) Of course, there was price gouging. If there wasn't any gouging, why would they have made so much revenue/profits? These greedy folks used the disasters and so-called oil refinery damages as an excuse to raise oil and energy prices. They raised their prices while their cost of drilling, processing and sales remained the same. That's the only way they could have made so much profits. HIGH CONSUMER PRICES WITH SAME COST OF GOODS SOLD = HIGHER PROFITS. I don't know much about economics et al but that is simple math. If their cost had increased as they claimed, then raising gas prices would not given them as much profits as they had.

The greed of these corporate executives has always been mystifying to me. In NC, the price of heating oil will increase by at least 11% this winter and in some other parts of the countries, it is expected to rise up at least by 50%. And guess what this cost of energy is already trickling down to the cost of everything else because energy basically drives the cost of manufacturing, thus the cost of goods sold and thus consumer prices - INFLATION. All, without consumers having pay increase at work!!!

It will make sense if the increase was justified by increase in cost of producing these oil and energy. Apparently, the increase is not needed; if it was truly needed, increasing the price of oil and energy would not have necessarily led to the huge profits made by these f&*&^*&* oil companies. They really have no hearts at all. They lay off employees without thinking (while increasing their own personal earnings) and they rip off consumers without hesitating. Now, they are not only ripping off consumers, which you can do without necessarily raising inflation, they are raising inflation and affecting the livelihoods of many for no good cause.

I can't even describe how much I despise and abhor some of these CEOs. They disgust my guts and make me puke!
You know the only difference between the oil executives and Anini (notorious armed robber that terrorized Nigeria in the 80s or 90s - don't remember clearly) - Anini had guns.

Oil executives, I hope you all have some remorse and spend some of these profits in helping consumers OR burn in hell. AXXHOLES, like my friend says.

Laugh a little!
A friend of mine sent me these questions and thoughts. Thought they were quite interesting (at least some of them)

If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it Fed UP?
Do Lipton Tea employees take coffee breaks?
If olive oil comes from olives, where does baby oil come from?
If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren't people from Holland called Holes?
Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker.
If horrific means to make horrible, does terrific mean to make terrible?
Why is it called building when it is already built?
If a book about failures sells, is it a success ?
If you're not supposed to drink and drive, then why do bars have parking lots?
If you take an Oriental person and spin him around several times, does he become disoriented?

I agree... some of them are lame. ok. maybe all. Whateva!

Nice, cheap (at least relatively) dress shirts!
I just got this link from Charles Tyrwhitt (quite a spelling for the pronunciation) and thought I should put it out here for anyone that might be interested in buying nicely-fitting dress shirts:
http://www.ctshirts.co.uk/start

Actually, another good one that I have used quite often is
http://www.tmlewin.co.uk

Everytime I wear their shirts to work and out generally, people ask me where I got them from. Well-fitting with great collars et al. They are much better than the Banana Republic, Express et al, though Express shirts can be very cheap when on sale too.

UK folks know all about this, anywayz.

Is it me or she wants to sleep with me?
I have this lady that I tutor in Math periodically. If only they paid teachers more money, that's what I will do for a living for sure cos I really enjoy it (one of the few things that I can say that I enjoy passionately). Anywayz, this lady is single, got a nice house, nice truck and over 40yrs old. Baiscally, nice older lady (won't say old cos they hate that) living large. Help me, peoples! The tutoring is in-house so I always go to her house to tutor. Everytime I go there, we talk about everything while tutoring. I don't know how it happens but all my tutees just find it very easy to talk to me about their family et business. Anywayz, I think this lady wants to sleep with me or something. Everytime we have a tutorial session, she always somehow drives the topic to sex et al. Everytime! One time, she told me about how she needs to take her dog - one nice huge dog that I always tell her to lock up when I'm there. Hey, I'm chicken, so what? She said she needed to take her dog to have sex with his partner, that way the dog can behave better. She then mentioned how that dogs gets more than she does. Then everytime she talks about how she has not had none in long while. I mean everytime!
I'm like what the f&%^ is my biz with all that! And sometimes, I feel like she's pretending not to know what I'm teaching her et al. Maybe it's just me, but I think she's hinting stuff. But it definitely ain't happenning. She is cool peoples et al and pays me fine when I tutor her (I guess that could be another sign. :)). My mind is too preoccupied for that. Besides, naaa!!!! HELL NO!!!!
But I got to say though, she has some huge jugs (more like buckets cos those things are bigger than 2 of my heads combined) and trunk ?(the type you can almost put a cup on and it will stand). I'm sure she doesn't imply that anyway. It's just me making a presumption. Either way, definitely not interested!!! Tofiakwa!

Smartest 8-yr old in the world!
Having a kid like this guy must be great as a parent. An 8-yr-old physics college student? This guy is definitely a prodigy like the article called him. What kind of 8-yr-old passes elementary, middle school and high school and college entrance exams in 9 months (a feat that takes a normal Korean 12 yrs). Wow! What a phenomenon! That's outstanding. This Korean kid has been admitted to the Physics Department of Inha University.

http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/2005/11/05/200511050024.asp

This is great et al but it has its cons. This boy will end up not living every phase of his life like I believe every one should. But it's all good. The possibility of him inventing flying cars might make up for that, I guess.

100 best English-language novels from 1923 till date – Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
As a kid, I remember my mom forcing me to read that book. Though, I have to say that on starting to read the book, I fell in love with it myself. That book got me into reading novels as a kid especially when I was in secondary school. Been in a while since I read any, though. I am glad Papa Achebe's book (that's what I call him) made the list of 100. It's the only novel authored by a Nigerian (or an African as far as I know) on the list. That novel is a definite classic and I am glad even Time critics agree with that. The plot, the tragedy, the portrayal of the deep Ibo culture in a fiction, the dialogue, the candor, the passion of the protagonist which ultimately led to his demise, the chivalry, the colonialism of the country, Ikemefuna's death, etc, make it the best novel that has come out of Africa, not just Nigeria. And the title? Couldn't be better. NOW, THAT'S A CLASSIC! In fact, I am going to read that book again. And I can't wait to see the movie again when I finally make it to Naija some year. :)

Big ups to Naija's own, Chinua Achebe. You make me proud to be a Nigerian. EBUBEDIKE!!!! UMUOFIA KWENU!!! YAH! (Hope it's yah. : ))

http://www.time.com/time/2005/100books/the_complete_list.html

I must also say that the list is definitely ok with me. It's very diverse. It includes books from a varied mix of authors – Salman Rushdie, Richard Wright, J.R.R. Tolkien (of course, Lord of the Rings), Zora Neale Hurston (Their Eyes Were Watching God – great book. read it for a college class. Hmmh. I wonder where my professor is now. Ms Yolanda was full of elegance and fiiiinnnneeee! Damn! I have to marry a woman like her! Oh sorry!) among others. Maybe Wole Soyinka could have made it. Just maybe. That would have been nice, but oh well, more than ever before (especially with all these bastard Nigerian fraudsters that mar our names) Papa Achebe has made me proud to be a Nigerian. UMUOFIA KWENU!!!
